There are ways to make your coffee habit more <strong>eco-friendly<\/strong> without making any noticeable sacrifices. Instead of giving your cash to multinational corporations (<em>which often have questionable business practices<\/em>), <strong>invest in your community<\/strong> by choosing to buy from<strong> local roasters.<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose organic<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Organic coffee<\/strong> is grown without synthetic pesticides, fertilizers, and other harmful chemicals. This, naturally, means that the beverage you\u2019re drinking will be healthier for you. Furthermore, it means that the soil where the coffee plants are grown will be cultivated sustainably and uninfected by toxins.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how can you know a certain coffee brand is organic? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/how-do-i-know-if-a-company-is-greenwashing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Beware of greenwashing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and look for products that carry labels such as the \u201c<strong>USDA Certified Organic<\/strong>\u201d badge. Many multinational coffee corporations are making their coffee plantations by cutting down rainforests. Not only that, but they\u2019re also creating appallingly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foodispower.org\/our-food-choices\/coffee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exploitative labor conditions for the plantation workers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Fair trade coffee<\/strong> means that the workers are getting fair living wages and that the environment isn\u2019t endangered by the coffee planting and harvesting. Just like with organic products, there are certification badges which will tell you which products are grown responsibly. Some of the badges to look for are <strong>\u201cBird Friendly\u201d, \u201cRainforest Alliance\u201d, and \u201cFair Trade\u201d.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brew your own coffee<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It's always convenient to get your coffee from a shop, especially when you\u2019re on your way to work. However, <strong>making coffee at home<\/strong> is not painfully inconvenient, and it goes a long way. It is particularly nice knowing that by making coffee at home, you\u2019re saving money as well as protecting the environment because you\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/waste-reduction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">not using paper cups, plastic lids, napkins, and so on.&nbsp;<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choose reusable and compostable<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll have to use some sort of filters to <strong>brew your coffee<\/strong> in a coffee machine at home.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where do all those filters go? In the trash can and then onto a landfill. To avoid contributing to the massive amounts of garbage we\u2019re polluting the Earth with, look for <a href=\"http:\/\/lifewithoutplastic.com\/coffee-tea\/?aff=463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">reusable filters<\/a> and wash them after use.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, did you know that the convenient and beloved <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gourmesso.com\/blogs\/news\/how-bad-are-kcups-for-the-environment\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">K-cups are an environmental threat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Only 5% of the cup is made up of recyclable material. There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/recyclable-pods-for-single-use-brewer\/\">alternatives<\/a>, though. You can opt for compostable pods for <!-- tasty-links-ignore -->coffee<!-- \/tasty-links-ignore --> machines, which significantly reduce the negative environmental impact.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t throw the coffee grounds<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you throw away the used coffee grounds after you\u2019re done brewing? Well, that\u2019s a big mistake because they can be pretty useful. Also, you can simply throw the coffee grounds directly into the soil, because the nitrogen in the coffee is a pretty powerful fertilizer as it is.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buy a French press<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/30p0dAx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">French press<\/a> is certainly a more <strong>eco-friendly<\/strong> way to prepare coffee because you don\u2019t have to use filters and pods. It also produces a more flavorful and aromatic beverage than the conventional drip <!-- tasty-links-ignore -->coffee<!-- \/tasty-links-ignore --> machines.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get a reusable cup&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many coffees-to-go do you take a day? One? Two? You must have thrown away more than 400 plastic cups in the last year. In most coffee shops, these cups are only partially degradable or not degradable at all. This problem is easily solved by <a href=\"http:\/\/lifewithoutplastic.com\/coffee-tea\/?aff=463\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">buying a reusable cup<\/a> and carrying it with you. In some <!-- tasty-links-ignore -->coffee<!-- \/tasty-links-ignore --> shops, you\u2019ll even get a discount for this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for your workplace \u2013 if you have a coffee machine and use plastic cups for drinking, you can leave your cup at the office.
