We can take the benefits of nature a step further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shinrin Yoku &#8211; taking in the forest atmosphere<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forest bathing is not all that new, but maybe new to you. \u201cShinrin-yoku is a term that means \u2018taking in the forest atmosphere\u2019 or \u2018forest bathing.\u2019 It was developed in Japan during the 1980s and has become a cornerstone of preventive health care and healing in Japanese medicine. Researchers primarily in Japan and South Korea have established a robust body of scientific literature on the health benefits of <strong>spending time under the canopy of a living forest<\/strong>. Now their research is helping to establish Shinrin-yoku and forest therapy throughout the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is forest bathing?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are wondering <strong>what forest bathing is<\/strong>, or how it differs from hiking in the woods, the best description I have found was written by author, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ronaberg.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">Rona Berg<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Forest bathing is magical and medicinal<\/em>. The point is to slow down and pay attention, to become attuned to nature. It is not hiking; it is not a workout; it is not striding purposefully toward a two- or four- or eight-mile marker. It is about being mindful, in the moment, feeling the roughness of bark and snapping twigs, inhaling the forest smells, heightening awareness of your surroundings, appreciating nature and absorbing the peace that can be found there. It is cleansing, in a metaphysical way, and offers tangible, physical benefits. Magical. Medicinal. I agree.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Children are natural forest bathers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a child, I spent long hours in the woods behind my home. Playing with my dog \u201cUno\u201d or watching at the forest bed. Taking off my shoes to plant my feet on the moss, lying on rocks, watching clouds, and just breathing in the fresh-cut hay. My cousins and I spent many afternoons and weekends building homes with fallen branches, sweeping pine needles from rocks, and skipping stones across the pond.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anyone can benefit from Forest Bathing<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe Japanese have known for years that spending mindful time in the woods is beneficial for body and soul. Now western doctors \u2013 and royals \u2013 agree\u201d says Harriet Sherwood in the article <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/jun\/08\/forest-bathing-japanese-practice-in-west-wellbeing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting back to nature: how forest bathing can make us feel better<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Apparently, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/shortcuts\/2019\/jan\/16\/wellness-now-right-royal-fad\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duchess of Cambridge often indulges herself in Forest Bathing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-berkshire-48326318\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back to Nature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, was, according to her co-designers, inspired by \u201c<em>forest bathing<\/em>\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, you see? Even those with everything partake in nature therapy! I've always said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/habit-11-self-care-is-not-selfish-its-important\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">self-care doesn't have to be expensive<\/a> and it doesn't need to involve a spa!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"is-style-subheading\">Forest Bathing &#8211; A natural prescription for the stressed out, overwhelmed, and anxious<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Health Benefits Associated with Forest Bathing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/qz.com\/804022\/health-benefits-japanese-forest-bathing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Japanese practice of forest bathing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is proven to lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce stress hormone production, boost the immune system, and improve overall feelings of wellbeing.\u201d Does this even come as a surprise anymore, considering that most of us spend the majority of our time squared in by four walls&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are constantly recharging our phones; rarely recharging ourselves. No wonder we are so often fatigued and in a sad state of mind!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing in nature can restore our mood, give us back our energy and vitality, refresh and rejuvenate us&#8230;even a small amount of time in nature can impact our health. A two-hour forest bath will help you to unplug from technology and slow down. The benefit is not the same when walking on a treadmill or in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some doctors are <strong>writing prescriptions for outdoor time<\/strong>, according to the author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2015\/10\/the-nature-cure\/403210\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Nature Cure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cOther research, conducted with actual humans, does support the idea that spending time in nature makes people healthier. Children with ADHD who regularly play in parks have been found to have milder symptoms than those who spend more time indoors, for example, and therapeutic-camping programs have been found to decrease relapse rates in substance addicts.\u201d&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mindfulness, Meditation and Forest Bathing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the reason i<\/span>t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is so therapeutic is that, in a sense, it is meditation and mindfulness. It <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lifebeyondnumbers.com\/dr-qing-li-forest-bathing-why-you-need\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engages all of our senses<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sense of <strong>sight<\/strong>: forest landscape- green color, yellow color and red color and other colors<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sense of <strong>smell<\/strong>: special good smell, the fragrance from trees<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sense of <strong>hearing<\/strong>: forest sounds, birdsong<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sense of <strong>touch<\/strong>: Touching trees can put your whole body in the forest atmosphere<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The sense of <strong>taste<\/strong>: Eating foods and fruits from forests, taste the fresh air in forests<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to start Forest Bathing<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pick a nature spot and go (preferably close to home, easy to access, not a strenuous trail)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Put productivity out of your mind<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Allow yourself just to be there<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Walk slowly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Notice the sights, sounds, smells, and feeling of the forest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Express your appreciation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repeat every month!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have children, try taking some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/nature-walks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"false noopener noreferrer\">nature walks<\/a>. Head out into nature and observe everything with your senses.
