Not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chubby<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bit heavy<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: obese.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the record, obesity is defined as having a BMI <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/growthcharts\/clinical_charts.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at or above the 95<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> percentile<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At least 30 million people of all ages also suffer from an eating disorder in the US.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having both of these facts in mind, it becomes clear why it is of paramount importance to teach our kids why healthy eating is essential at a very young age. It\u2019s our responsibility to help them adopt habits that will enable them to have a healthy and fruitful life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, knowing how to achieve just that without resorting to body-shaming or speaking negatively about certain foods can be a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s explore what our options are.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Take your kids shopping<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/rHz7sQd.jpg\" \/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepik.com\/free-photo\/mother-with-daughter-grocery-store_5852334.htm#page=1&query=kid%20grocery%20shopping&position=28\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freepik.com<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you strive to teach your children about healthy eating, the first thing you can do is involve them in all the food choices you make as a family. Bring them grocery shopping and let them choose some of the fruits and veggies you purchase.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by creating a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/simplelivingcountrygal.com\/how-to-make-an-insanely-effective-grocery-list\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">master grocery list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and instead of actual food items, list things like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five veggies for Monday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">three fruits for Tuesday<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, etc. Then let your kids make the choice of what these will be.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While in the store, show them different options, and make it a fun outing: try new flavors and discover what you like and dislike. Once you have them engaged and invested like this, they'll be more likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/get-back-in-the-kitchen\/\">join you in the kitchen<\/a>, too.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Talk to them about different habits and styles of healthy eating<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important that your children know there is more than one way to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This will mean talking to them about vegetarianism and veganism, for example. Chances are they will be exposed to someone who eats this way already.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can also explain the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ultimatemealplans.com\/paleo\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basics of a Paleo meal plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and try it out for a week or so. It\u2019s still all about exploring the different options available to them and making an educated choice about what they want to eat.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t (ab)use food as a reward or punishment<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/AL68dPX.jpg\" \/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/images.unsplash.com\/photo-1505678261036-a3fcc5e884ee?ixlib=rb-1.2.1&ixid=eyJhcHBfaWQiOjEyMDd9&auto=format&fit=crop&w=3300&q=80\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unsplash.com<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many parents reward their kids with sweets when they do something right or when they achieve a certain milestone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure there is nothing wrong with eating sweets every once in a while. But if you teach your children that sugar is what you get when you win at something, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urmc.rochester.edu\/encyclopedia\/content.aspx?ContentTypeID=160&ContentID=32\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they will develop an unhealthy relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to it. What if they keep winning?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the other hand, sending your kids to bed without supper does the same thing: it lets your kids believe that food is something that gets taken away when they are bad. Should they then not eat when they don\u2019t succeed at something? You can see how this kind of influence can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/coping-emotional-eating\/\">emotional eating<\/a> and make it harder for them to maintain a healthy eating regime as they grow into adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Food is both fuel and pure enjoyment, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/the-yummy-foods-i-keep-in-my-healthy-fridge\/\">good food<\/a>. If your kids are to treat it as such, they need to realize what it gives them: energy and momentary pleasure, but nothing else.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t bring weight into healthy eating conversations<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/sy7HjE7.jpg\" \/><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Source: <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.freepik.com\/free-photo\/family-cooking-dinner-chatting_2232882.htm#page=1&query=mother%20child%20talking&position=42\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">freepik.com<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t ever talk about being fit or skinny at the same time you\u2019re talking about healthy eating. On the same note, don\u2019t associate being fat and ugly with high-sugar and high-calorie foods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eating healthy is about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> healthy, not about looking good. Its purpose is to make you feel good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, as adults, we know that looking good will be a side effect of healthy eating. But that\u2019s not the equation your kids need to adopt at an early age.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t equate being fat with superficial negativity. Equate it with not being healthy, which is what you want to be. Don\u2019t tell your kids they shouldn\u2019t eat like pigs, or that fatty food will make them look like pigs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is nothing wrong with eating fatty and \u2018bad for you\u2019 foods now and then. It\u2019s making a habit out of eating such foods that are bad.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Have the odd cheeseburger<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In order to reinforce the above point, make sure you, as a family, enjoy a \u2018bad for you\u2019 meal or snack every so often. Don\u2019t make the mistake of banning all unhealthy food from the house. Your kids will just get it elsewhere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t make it into an occasion either. Don\u2019t celebrate or turn burger night into an event. They\u2019ll recognize it for what it is: a good model to live up to. And it\u2019s certainly a more balanced approach than equating healthy eating with a strict, obsessive regime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Don\u2019t force your kids to eat everything<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some parents get frustrated when their kids refuse to eat a certain fruit or veg. Yet, this is completely normal and fine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you like every fruit and veg on the planet? Every meal, every ingredient is to your liking?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teach your kids that they don\u2019t have to like everything and that it\u2019s okay not to like the taste of something. When in a restaurant or as a guest, they might need to eat something they don\u2019t like, but that\u2019s also a part of life. But as long as you stick to variety and get your five-a-day in, the choices should be simple.
