That\u2019s what I always thought of until I explored a spice shop back on one of our&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLjvlC9hrVqF152AKUeydp6DZiUkWeNvbv\">One Tank Road Trips<\/a>. Now I am so happy that&nbsp;I discovered&nbsp;Sumac because it has so many uses AND here's the kicker its SO good for you. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The edible variety of Sumac is called <strong>Staghorn Sumac<\/strong>. &nbsp;Poison sumac has white berries and Staghorn sumac has red berries that last from spring through the summer. &nbsp;To see the difference between poison and staghorn sumac check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.edibleeastend.com\/2012\/08\/09\/harvest-sumac\/\">this post and video<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumac is considered a Mediterranean spice. It is used in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.epicurious.com\/recipes\/food\/views\/zaatar-106776\">Za\u2019atar<\/a> which is various herbs and spices like thyme.\u00a0<\/span>Sumac is an essential in the Turkish pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2aJswjl\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sumac<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a delightful <em>citrusy spice<\/em> that adds an intense flavor in a way similar to salt because it doesn\u2019t cover or mask the flavor of the foods you put it on, rather it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">enhances<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the flavor. It&nbsp;is a dried flower that adds an earthy yet lemony tart pop of flavor to your dishes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to adding flavor to dishes Sumac boasts an ORAC rating over 1500 (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity is basically a unit of measure for antioxidants&#8230; the higher the better). This powerful spice&nbsp;is actually used in many cultures for it's incredible healing properties. It is said to be anti-aging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-fungal and anti-microbial. While I love to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/benefits-of-turmeric\/\">Turmeric<\/a> for it's health properties, Sumac is now going to be part of my arsenal as well!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1447\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac.jpg\" alt=\"Sumac, the spice you're probably not using...\" class=\"wp-image-4608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-300x226.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-400x300.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-600x452.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-768x579.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-800x603.jpg 800w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-1024x772.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac-1536x1158.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/staghorn-sumac.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1920px) 100vw, 1920px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some dishes in which I have used the spice&nbsp;sumac:<\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft\"><img fetchpriority=\"low\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\"  src=\"\/\/ws-na.amazon-adsystem.com\/widgets\/q?_encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B000JSQ282&Format=_SL160_&ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=that077-20\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/baba-ghanoush\/\">Baba ganoush\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/li><li>Hummus comes alive\u00a0when you add a garnish amount<\/li><li>Roasted chicken becomes\u00a0divine<\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fish dishes&#8230;<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feta gets a new kick\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Olive oil for dipping bread in gets a boost in health and flavor with a dash of Sumac<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Popcorn (tastes just like salt and vinegar only better!)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enhances the flavor of fried foods like nothing else<\/span><\/li><li>In caramelized onions, oh my word!!<\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baked garbanzo beans with sumac and black pepper, yes please!<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meatloaf becomes a family favorite when you add this spice<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combine with orange juice, garlic, honey and soy sauce to make an <strong>amazing rib marinade<\/strong><\/span><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thatorganicmom.com\/hungarian-breakfast-bowl\/\">Hungarian Breakfast Bowl<\/a> &#8211; add it along with the paprika<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I have even added it&nbsp;to a roast beef and veggie sandwich (if you'd like to see the replay video of the sandwich just find me on Periscope!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just look at this&nbsp;yummy popcorn! My kids love it, they say it tastes like&nbsp;salt and vinegar. &nbsp;Have you ever used Sumac in cooking before?
